To give all the information necessary for the complete construction of machine structure there must be graphic language of lines. Describing its size and dimensions notes or material and descriptive titles. All these must be lettered. There is no part important than lettering.
B.I.S. has recommended letters must be easy to write and easy to read. The main requirements for lettering on the engineering drawing are legibility, uniformity, easy and rapidly in exclusion.
In the art of lettering, there are various forms of alphabets used. The parents of all these are ‘old roman numbers’.
A variation known as modern roman which is used by civil engineering in finished maps and in tropographic drawing for working drawings. Simplified form called as ‘gothic’s letters are used.
There are two types of gothic letters-
1. Single stroke gothic letters (vertical or inclined)
2. Double stroke gothic letters (vertical or inclined)
Gothic means thickness.
